Meet Fu Chunli, The Lucky Winner Of Apple’s 25 Billionth App Download Competition And A $10,000 iTunes Gift Card

When the iOS App Store was first launched in 2008, not even Apple themselves could have predicted the store’s meteoric rise to become the undisputed heavy-weight champion of the app distribution world. At the beginning of 2011 Apple launched a competition, offering a $10,000 iTunes gift card to the lucky App Store user who downloaded the 10 billionth app from the store. The Cupertino company has since repeated that offering by giving away a gift card of the same value to whoever downloaded the twenty-fifth billionth app.

That competition has been and gone, with the lucky winner being announced as Fu Chunli, a Chinese citizen from the city of Qingdao in the Shandong Province of Eastern China. The contest was open to App Store users from all over the world, but Chunli managed to beat all of the competition by downloading a free copy of the popular Where’s My Water? app. What makes the story even more compelling is that when downloading the app; she actually had no idea about Apple’s competition and was still at the stage of getting used to using the App Store’s interface.

As a competition winner, Apple have presented Fu Chunli with an iTunes gift card worth a whopping $10,000, allowing her to download apps, music, movies and TV programs from across Apple’s range of offered content. To celebrate the victory, Apple invited her to attend a special event at the Beijing Apple Store to collect her prize, view the company’s in-store products and pose for the obligatory press pictures. Apple could have simply posted the gift card to her or credited the amount to her Apple ID but in typical Apple fashion they chose to offer the winner a warm reception and gain some positive exposure in the process which will no doubt put them in good light in one of the world’s emerging markets.

The local media in Qingdao now refer to Fu Chunli as the ‘Apple Girl’, but the story could have been so different considering that she actually believed the original call from Apple was nothing more than a hoax. Even the congratulatory calls from friends and family members wasn’t enough to convince her the competition was genuine, and it wasn’t until she received an email from Apple Inc. then the news eventually began to sink in. The iPhone was responsible for downloading the 25 billionth app is Chunli’s first Apple product, but we are pretty sure it won’t be her last.

Facebook Messenger For Windows Released – Download Now!

Personally speaking, I am not a big Facebook fan, but there are millions upon millions of people all over the globe who can’t go a day without logging into the world’s largest social network and checking out what kind of sandwich their old school friend had for lunch, or poking their best friend in an act of online bullying. Although already wildly popular, the whole Facebook experience may be a distinctly better one for a large portion of users if they didn’t need to be constantly signed into the web service with a browser running all the time.

In a technology driven world that is being overrun by all kinds of apps on various platforms, it seems that the Facebook team has cottoned on to the fact that user engagement might increase if they could use some of the more core Facebook services from within a dedicated desktop client. With that in mind, we are officially seeing the launch of Facebook Messenger for Windows Desktop Chat Client, although a number of you might already be using the client due to its leak back in December. Some of you may remember in December when an Israel-based blogger was given access to the Facebook Chat test group and trusted with an unprotected link to download the software. Rightly or wrongly, he quickly made the link public, given early access to the software to anyone who wanted it.

On the back of the leak, Facebook decided to make the link publicly available via official means through their help center, but didn’t exactly make song and dance about the client’s existence. That is all changing today with the company officially launching the chat client, which features nothing more than bug fixes and some fine-tuning over the leaked version. The client is available now for the Windows 7 operating system, and will be coming soon to Mac OS X, featuring the ability to receive and view notifications, read the news feed and send and receive chat messages without the need for web a browser being open, all the time.

Perhaps a somewhat unknown fact about the company is the existence of their Gatekeeper infrastructure which allows Facebook to test new features and products out on users without their knowledge. It is often the case that engineers behind the scenes can turn functionality on and off at will, granting or denying users access to new features without them actually knowing that they are testing something new. Whether or not this method of using registered members as guinea pigs is the right way to go about gathering usage data is entirely a different story.

TechCrunch have noted a couple of ways that they believe the chat client will help Facebook:

• Persistent access to Chat will increase engagement of the primary user, and also draw their friends to spend more time on Facebook
• Persistent access to notifications, messages, and friend requests that launch Facebook.com may lead to more return visits than users haphazardly stopping by the website to check for these alerts.

With users already spending a record breaking amount of time on Facebook, the creation and release of dedicated chat clients which allow the use of core features will no doubt go some way to increasing that active time.

Download And Install Leaked Official Android 4.0.3 ICS ROM For AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket [How-to Tutorial]

AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket users rejoice! An Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM (official) has been leaked for the device which can be flashed in a few simple steps. Those of you interested can check out our easy-to-follow step-by-step guide right after the jump!

DISCLAIMER: Redmond Pie will not be held responsible if you lose data or your device gets damaged in the following of this guide. Proceed at your own risk.

In case you’re wondering, this procedure doesn’t require rooting. ODIN is able to flash a new firmware without requiring root access. Just be sure to do this with a sufficiently charged device and remember to backup all your sensitive data since this procedure, according to reports we’re hearing, will completely delete data such as contacts, texts, photos/videos, music, apps and their data and system settings.

Step 1: Download the .exe file from here [RootzWiki Thread]. It is a one-click solution which includes ODIN, the popular firmware flashing tool for Samsung devices.

Step 2: Once download is complete, double-click the .exe to launch ODIN.

Step 3: Turn off your AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket, take out the battery and put it back in again.

Step 4: Press and hold Volume Up + Volume Down and simultaneously connect the phone with your PC. Do not let go of the buttons while connecting the phone or it won’t boot into Download mode.

When your phone goes into Download mode, it should be detected by ODIN.

Step 5: Click Start in ODIN and let the flashing commence!

If you followed the steps correctly, your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket will now boot into a leaked version of the official Android 4.0.3 ICS ROM.

As far as I can tell from the screenshots, it’s similar to the Android 4.0.3 ICS upgrade for the International Version of the Galaxy S II which looks more-or-less exactly like the stock Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM that the device comes with. This is both a good and a bad thing: you get the familiarity of Gingerbread, but the delicious functionality of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Of all the essential everyday uses our smartphones give us, the simplest – and perhaps, the most vital – is the alarm clock.

The App store is trawling with various alarm clock apps, most of which don’t bring anything new to the table. There are the rather pleasant "night stand" apps, which give a nice warm glow to a dark room, as well as those which present a collage of beautiful images and backdrops blended into one another. One can get alarm clocks with RSS feeds, weather, and news updates all on standby ready to ease those AM blues, but there’s always room for improvement.

Wave Alarm by Augmented Minds changes the game a little – bringing a trump card over rivaling alarm clock apps. Unlike alternatives, which usually require you to slide in order to stop your alarm, Wave Alarm incorporates Motion Control technology, and as the name entails, you simply wave off your device in order to silence or snooze the alarm.

The description on the App Store states:

Utilizing Motion Control and detection, you never need to touch your phone again in the morning to turn off the alarm or to snooze, just wave your hand over the device when the alarm is sounding, and Wave Alarm will snooze or silence the alarm for you!

It’s an interesting take on just which type of alarm works best, although one suspects a wave is a rather easy way to fob your alarm off, before falling back to sleep. I’m inclined to think that the Math Alarm Cydia tweak is a more appropriate way to wake up – prompting the serial sleeper to solve a minor math problem before the noise can be stopped.

As well as the motion alarm, it’s also possible to have a normal alarm, and music from the device’s library can be used as the wake-up melody. As is the case with all iOS alarm apps (aside from stock), multitasking limitations mean Wave Alarm must be running in the foreground for it to work fully.

It works on all iDevices with front-facing cameras (required for motion detection). It’s free to download and try, but the full version costs $1.99 via in-app purchase.

Free to download, Evernote is arguably the most popular option available. The free version is limited to 60 MB/month, while the premium service costs $5 per month or $45 per year. It comes with a bunch of useful features, allowing you to add text, audio, and images to the same note if you so wish.

As a long-time user of this app on both iPhone and iPad, I would go as far as to say that no Twitter user should be without Tweetbot.

GarageBand

Like iPhoto, GarageBand is another app which started out as a Mac app. Since being released for iPad early last year, music fans have been busily producing their own tunes on-the-fly.

Despite the third-gen device focusing heavily on the display and image-taking capabilities, that doesn’t mean that a Retina-optimized GarageBand should be overlooked. If you have enjoyed using it in your iPad for the last year, you’ll surely continue to enjoy arranging and mixing your songs with up to eight other tracks using Touch Instruments, audio recordings, and loops.

Consisting of Keynote, Pages and Numbers (Powerpoint, Word and Excel) to the Windows-tuned folk among you, it makes creating, saving editing and exporting documents extremely easy, and although the apps are priced at 10 bucks each, most would conclude that they are worth the money.

NYTimes For iPad

Then again, the Real Racing experience isn’t once to be taken merely at face value, and both games provide cutting-edge gameplay and a decent challenge in order to keep a gamer interested for more than half an hour.

In iOS terms, these games are your Gran Turismo series – setting a high benchmark from which other publishers and developers are struggling to emulate.

If you’re into your racing games, Real Racing 2 HD is the best; and with the sharp visuals now even sharper, you’ll surely be engrossed in what is quickly becoming a classic iOS title.

Flight Control Rocket

Flight Control – a simple concept which involved landing small planes on color coded runways in a candy land environment – became an early favorite among iOS users, particularly as Apple demoed the game throughout most of its iconic stores on both the iPad and iPhone.

Creator Firemint Party has ditched the cheesy music and visuals (well, sort of), to create a similar experience but with a more spacey, rocket-themed edginess.

The more it doesn’t sound as though it would be your type of game, the more I would encourage you to download it, as it is incredibly addictive.

Labyrinth 2 HD

Ahh, finally – some physics, I hear you cry! No list of iOS games would be complete without some form of physics-based puzzler, and Labyrinth is one of those that, although very well put together, will make you look rather unstable if you play while on the train/subway.

You must direct a small spherical object around a maze while avoiding the obstacles, before dropping it in the designated gap.

A lot of tilting, frustration and practice is needed before you finally find the hole, but, if you keep the faith, you’ll feel elated once you get it in. Wink.

At $7.99, it’s rather steep, but, worth it for the hours of fun you could be having.

Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy

We just couldn’t leave this one out of the list, we bring you a game first demoed by Apple at the official announcement at the Yerba Buena. Created by a true veteran of the gamersphere in the form of Namco, this fun, addictive sky shooter provides a great alternative to the flurry of first-person shooters available at the App Store.

Although it offers a campaign mode that’ll have you doing battle instead of being productive, the main appeal is – as usual – in the multiplayer experience, which is as smooth and streamlined as you could possibly imagine.

It costs $4.99, and in our view, is well worth it.

Twitter

Lets face it, with deep integration of Twitter itself in iOS, there’s a very small chance that you’re left out from the 140 character party. Infinity Blade II

First showcased back in October at the iPhone 4S announcement, it’s a game driven by jaw dropping and some serious whooping graphics. Having been updated with Retina graphics just for the new iPad, it’s a game which should sit on any iPad owner’s SpringBoard no matter what happens.

For a price of $6.99, it might sound a bit too steep, but the graphics and gameplay which it has to offer, the price is more than justified.

Firefox 11 For Windows, OS X & Linux Now Available For Download

It wasn’t that long ago when users had to wait an eternity for the developers over at Mozilla and Google to push out new versions of the popular Firefox and Chrome web browsers. In fact, pretty much every major browser version seemed to have an extremely long shelf life before the developers felt it needed an update and brought new and improved features to the public. Thankfully, it looks as though that trend of making users wait for improvements has been put to bed, with Mozilla pumping out the updates thick and fast for its Firefox browser.

It was only the end of January that the development team released Firefox version 10 into the wild, bringing numerous security fixes as well some additional features such as CSS3 3D transforms and anti-aliasing for WebGL. Just under six weeks down the line and Mozilla have today released Firefox version 11 which doesn’t offer any mind blowing enhancements or new features and can be seen as a more evolutionary update rather than revolutionary. The quick release seems to fall in line with the new browser update strategy which has been adopted to keep up with Google who decided to significantly reduce the time scales in between their Chrome browser releases.

Firefox is one of the world’s most popular web browsers and will obviously have a massive amount of people heading for the download button, but just what is included in the version 11 build? Well, as mentioned earlier, there isn’t a great deal to get excited about, but it does feature a few significant improvements which will benefit both developers and the average user, as well as offering the obligatory bug fixes which are present in every build.

The most notable addition to Firefox version 11 is the ability to migrate bookmarks, browsing history and stored cookies from Google Chrome, with Mozilla also adding synchronization features for add-ons and adding support for some additional CSS properties. From a developers point of view, Firefox 11 brings the availability of the CSS style editor as well as being able to fully visualize a web page in 3D thanks to the new page inspector 3D view. A number of fixes have also been implemented which were left outstanding in the previous build, most notably a fix which brings redesigned HTML5 video controls, as well as rectifying the issue which prevented Growl notifications from being displayed when using Growl 1.3 or later.

With the time scales between each release being significantly cut, it is to be expected that each new public release will be more of an incremental build rather than one which comes out with an array of new and impressive features. However, with that in mind, the shorter time scales will also see any annoying bugs or issues being ironed out a lot quicker.

Viddy For iPhone: An App That’s Like Instagram For Videos – Download Now!

When Apple first launched the iPhone, it was a device which immediately raised the bar in the mobile device world. Considering the successes that the Instagram team have enjoyed with their iOS app, it seems rather strange that we haven’t seen a whole host of spin off apps being launched.

In the last few weeks people have been talking about the GifBoom application which functions in relatively the same way as Instagram, allowing animated GIFs to be created from frames taken using the iPhone camera. The files can then be uploaded to a network for users to comment on and like, in similar fashion to Instagram. We also now have another app, going by the name of ‘Viddy’, which allows users to connect via Facebook or Twitter and capture, beautify and share videos with the world. IntelliScreenX also benefits from an embedded, advanced RSS reader which pulls in feeds from a Google Reader account and has a number of popular feeds built right in as standard. As you may expect from an intelligent application such as this, the default iOS Calendar is also included, as well as built in support for SMS composition and reply, and compatibility with Notification Center.

Additional support and features seem to be added with every update of IntelliScreenX, and the latest few versions have been no different. The last update in February brought some fixes for Bluetooth and Facebook issues as well enhancements to the built-in Messages+ functions. The latest update has been pushed today, taking IntelliScreenX to version 1.3.6 and brings total compatibility for iOS 5.1, released by Apple only six days ago. At the moment, it’s unlikely that many users have taken the plunge and upgraded to iOS 5.1, considering the lack of an untethered jailbreak, but the quick support and action by Intelliborn means that when the development teams do produce a untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak, the IntelliScreenX compatibility is already complete.
