IntelliScreenX Updated With Full Support For iOS 5.1 – Download Now

Advertisements

IntelliScreenX has been described by a lot of people as a good enough reason alone to jailbreak the iPhone, with some believing that Apple should adopt the ideas shown by Intelliborn and build them into future revisions of iOS. The commercial modification, which sits at home on the device’s lockscreen and integrates seamlessly into iOS provides a huge array of functionality which justifies the $9.99 price tag attached to it.

One of the highest compliments paid to IntelliScreenX is that it looks and fits so perfectly into the iOS setup that it could have been designed and created by Apple engineers themselves. The advanced features and extended configurations makes it suitable for users who want bare bone information displayed as well as those who want to use every aspect of the tweak and pull in information from every service on their device.

IntelliScreenX features a configurable email setup which allows users mark a message as read, delete the mail or open it directly through the Mail application. Users can also view their Facebook and Twitter timelines as well as interact with their friends and followers which makes it a powerful social hub right on the lockscreen. IntelliScreenX also benefits from an embedded, advanced RSS reader which pulls in feeds from a Google Reader account and has a number of popular feeds built right in as standard. As you may expect from an intelligent application such as this, the default iOS Calendar is also included, as well as built in support for SMS composition and reply, and compatibility with Notification Center.

IMG_0018

Additional support and features seem to be added with every update of IntelliScreenX, and the latest few versions have been no different. The last update in February brought some fixes for Bluetooth and Facebook issues as well enhancements to the built-in Messages+ functions. The latest update has been pushed today, taking IntelliScreenX to version 1.3.6 and brings total compatibility for iOS 5.1, released by Apple only six days ago. At the moment, it’s unlikely that many users have taken the plunge and upgraded to iOS 5.1, considering the lack of an untethered jailbreak, but the quick support and action by Intelliborn means that when the development teams do produce a untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak, the IntelliScreenX compatibility is already complete.

Of course, you will need to jailbreak your device to install this tweak. For jailbreaking the latest iOS 5.1 (tethered), follow the instructions posted here to jailbreak using Redsn0w, or here for Sn0wbreeze. For jailbreaking iPhone 4S and iPad 2, you can simply follow our step by step tutorial posted here to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using Absinthe on Windows or Mac. Those of you with an iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touches can use Redsn0w or Sn0wbreeze to untether jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1.

Apple To Release 15-Inch MacBook Air With Ivy Bridge Chip Next Month [REPORT]

Advertisements

It’s a subject we’ve touched on a few times over the last couple of months, and now the hype surrounding the rumors of the iPad 3 have been somewhat satisfied, the tech world can switch its attentions to other potential Apple releases – namely a 15-inch MacBook Air.

The Air – particularly in its current form factor, has become one of the Cupertino company’s most celebrated products, and with PC makers trying very hard to emulate the wafer-thin design with Ultrabooks, it’s not altogether difficult to see why.

designunibody2-1311166035

While there has been much talk of the MacBook Pro range being subject do a design overhaul in the image of the Air, spectators have also toyed with the idea of the compacter of the two notebooks adding a third wheel to the current 11 and 13 inch models available.

Electric Pig reckons an "anonymous vendor" at a UK accessories expo in London stated earlier this week that a new size Air would be arriving in a "shakeup [that] will happen in April".

Whilst the MacBook Pro remains vastly superior in terms of specs, Apple has packed in some impressive hardware into the slimmest of designs with the Air, and it wouldn’t exactly be an illogical step to add a 15-inch model to proceedings. Furthermore, it has been reported on numerous occasions that a new Air could capitalize on Intel’s new Ivy Bridge processors, although the chip maker has been somewhat slow in producing them. Still, if a sufficient number can be made, Apple would likely draw favoritism from Intel, which would in turn give the fruit company an edge over competitors.

Unlike the iPhone and iPad, which tend to arrive around the same time each year, Tim Cook’s company doesn’t have a set season for a MacBook Air launch. The first model arrived in January 2008, and was minorly updated later that year. The third installment didn’t arrive until October 2010, although it was worth the wait since that was the point where the design got its current, uber-sleek aesthetics.

11-inch MacBook Air

The last update was in July of last year, which renders the next release anybody’s guess. Whatever the case, if Apple does manage to pull off its first batch of Ivy Bridge, 15" units by next month, the response of consumers is likely to be as keen as ever.

$399 iPad 2 + Feature-Packed New iPad Will Render Apple Completely Untouchable [Opinion]

Advertisements

Ever since that media event on Wednesday at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, consumers, bloggers, analysts – in fact everybody in and around the greater gadget-sphere has been talking about Apple’s "new iPad" with scarcely any relent.

Understandably so, though. After all, its feature list is exceptional, and finally implements some of that delicious new hardware we’ve craved and pined for. The long overdue introduction of the Retina display is just the icing on the cake – a cake which packs in quad-core graphics, an iSmart camera, and, of course, 4G LTE compatibility. None of these new features would be of any use, though, if the battery didn’t have the endurance, but the new juice pack has increased in capacity by 70%. This means that, theoretically, the battery performance should be on par with that of its predecessor, although we’re rather cautious when assuming battery performance – especially when we’re dealing with a company still haunted by the iPhone 4S battery woes.

newipad

Amid all the excitement, the announcement that the iPad 2 would be dropping $100 was almost cast aside. Although the "new iPad" is wonderful, lest we forget that the iPad 2 has been the Dean of the tablet market for the last year, showing a clean pair of heels to rivaling efforts.

Now, one of the key advantages Android tablets have over iPad is that they’re invariably cheaper. For those unwilling to spend big, the likes of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 have always been a great failsafe for consumers, giving tablets running Google’s mobile OS a place in the Apple-dominated market.

With $100 knocked off the price of an already untouchable device, not only will Apple certainly have two generations of devices perched at the summit of every tablet-based numbers count-up, but the lower price point almost removes the floor from below the chasing pack. How are the likes of Samsung going to be able to trouble the new iPad when the elusive, Road Runner that was the iPad 2 is now even more of a favorable prospect to a consumer?

camera_hardware

I don’t have the answers, and judging by the lopsided market shares of Apple vs everybody else, none of the main manufacturers seem to have the formula either.

What can they do to halt the Apple juggernaut? Is it even halt-able? Leave your thoughts on our G+ or Facebook pages – we’d love to hear them!

Deck For iPhone Adds A Sidebar Action Menu For Quick Access To Your Favorite Apps

Advertisements

For established or up and coming iOS developers who are considering releasing something for download on the Cydia store, my advice would be to make sure that it is either entirely unique and innovative, or if it does offer similar functionality compared to an already available package, then make sure it dramatically improves upon it. With new packages being sent to repositories on an almost hourly basis, it stands to reason that we are ultimately going to see a slow down in unique creations and begin to see ideas regurgitated.

SBCoders have managed to hit the Cydia store with a package that not only looks great but but also functions extremely well. Deck, as the package is known, is one of the latest offerings to become available through Cydia, which offers users the ability to launch applications in a quick and efficient method. Quick launch tweaks are not alien to the Cydia store and in the past we have seen software which has added launch features to the lockscreen, Notification Center and various other places through iOS, but Deck takes it to the next level and manages to stand out from the rest with its approach.

After installation, Deck has its own dedicated preferences panel which contains all of the configurable options needed to set the tweak up to the individual user’s needs. Deck also hooks directly into Activator, like how many premium pieces of software do, meaning that it can be invoked using any supported gesture method that the user sees fit. When invoked, the Deck bar animates in from the right hand side of the device’s screen, providing quick and easy access to a number of settings.

All of the settings can be configured through the settings panel, and includes things like commonly used system toggles such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular data. The tweak also has the option of setting up a number of applications from the list of installed apps which allows quick launch. Tapping on the various icons in the main Deck sidebar will bring about different actions, an example of this is selecting the ‘@’ symbol which brings up an email menu, or selecting the ‘Phone’ symbol which brings up an alert view, containing options such as powering down the device, rebooting or locking the screen.

Deck doesn’t necessarily bring any mind blowing features or things that haven’t been done before. What it does bring however is a combination of features all mashed together into one extremely attractive, very functional and very polished package. Deck is available to download now from the ModMyi repository at a cost of $1.99

How To Bypass iOS 5.1 Restriction When Installing iMovie v1.3 On iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Running iOS 5.0.1

Advertisements

For those among us that are hardcore fans of not only Apple products, but also the software and mobile applications that they make, I am pretty sure you paid close attention to the announcements made during the recent media event in San Francisco. The public and media focus centered predominately around the fact that Apple were launching a new and improved Apple TV as well as the all new iPad, both of which are set for public release a week from today.

The pre-order section of the Apple website, which allows consumers to guarantee their new iPad, was expectedly hammered on Wednesday night and brought about the server and store down issues that we have been used to in the past. Apple also took the opportunity at the event to announce the immediate availability of a number of their chargeable applications which are available through the App Store. Apps such as the iWork suite, GarageBand and iMovie have been updated for compatibility with the new iPad Retina display, as well as a new iPhoto mobile app being launched.

iMovie

For those who love and can’t live without their jailbreak, the update of iMovie is bitter sweet. Yes, the app now benefits from a great deal more functionality and an improved user interface, but it also comes with  a requirement that iOS 5.1 be installed, meaning jailbroken users who wish to keep their untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1 couldn’t download it – until now. It seems that the App Store makes a quick reference check against a .plist entry saved in the CoreServices directory of the device to determine what version of iOS is installed. If it the check returns a value less than the minimum version required, an alert is displayed advising that it requires a specific iOS version.

For those users who are jailbroken, it is a simple case of using a program such as iFile, or SSHing into the device and changing the version string in the SystemVersion.plist, this in turn fools the OS into believing iOS 5.1 is installed, allowing the download of iMovie. A quick step by step is listed below.

NOTE: The following instructions requires your iOS device to be jailbroken. For jailbreaking the latest iOS 5.1 (tethered), follow the instructions posted here to jailbreak using Redsn0w.

Step 1: Open up the iFile application on the device to gain access to the file structure. Alternatively, users can SSH into the jailbroken device using a program such as FileZilla or CyberDuck.

Step 2: Navigate to the following directory – ‘/System/Library/CoreServices‘.

Step 3: At the very bottom of the CoreServices directory there will be a file called ‘SystemVersion.plist‘. Open up this file up by selecting it and then tapping on ‘Text Viewer‘.

Step 4: At the bottom of the file is a line of text which reads ‘5.0.1‘. Edit the file using iFile, or a standard text editing package and amend the ’5.0.1' to say ’5.1'. Note: If you are running an earlier version of iOS, the version number contained within the string tags will reflect that version.

Step 5: Save the file, exit iFile and then respring the device.

Step 6: Head over to the App Store, download the iMovie application and enjoy that cinematic goodness.

That should keep all you jailbroken iMovie lovers happy until the development teams can work their magic on the new iOS 5.1.

How To Install iPhoto App For iOS On iPad 1 [VIDEO]

Advertisements

With the public release of the the new iPad drawing ever closer, the gadget and Apple loving population are rightly becoming more excited as the days countdown until they can get their hands on the brand new tablet. Email inboxes around the globe are also starting to receive notifications that Apple have already sent their new shiny iPad out for shipping, prompting speculation that in some case it may even arrive before the March 16th official release date. I received my email this morning saying my two new iPads had been shipped, so fingers crossed that they get here promptly.

iPhoto

While consumers have been forced to nine days after the media event to get their hands on the announced new hardware, most of the software and applications which Apple announced were made available straight after the event. The updated iOS 5.1 started to make itself available for compatible devices almost immediately, with Apple’s chargeable App Store applications being pushed to the store pretty much right away. The iWork suite of apps which include Pages, Numbers and the popular Keynote have all received updates with the addition of a few features as well as an improved user interface for Retina iPad compatibility.

The extremely successful mobile GarageBand app has also received a notable upgrade as well as mobile movie editing package, iMovie. All these apps have benefited from an improved feature set, plus the required Retina graphics for the imminent launch of the new iPad. As if that wasn’t enough, Apple also introduced the immediate release of a mobile iPhoto app for iOS, built from the ground up to harness the power of the latest generation devices. iPhoto is a very popular Mac application that ships with OS X, so the introduction of a mobile version was sure to be a smash hit with consumers, the only problem being that it has a hardware requirement built in, meaning it is only officially compatible with the new iPad and the iPad 2.

Obviously there are a bunch of users who choose not to, or aren’t in a position to upgrade their hardware every twelve months, and considering the original iPad is still an extremely accomplished device, those owners are feeling a little hard done to. However, as is usually the way in these circumstances, a way has been found for owners of the original iPad to install the iPhoto for iPad application onto their first generation hardware.

The process is pretty painless and requires the download of the iPhoto app via the iTunes application on a computer, as well as the download of Apple’s iPhone Configuration Tool Utility which is available for both Windows and Mac. The next stages require the iPad to be connected to the computer and synced with iTunes as normal, launching the iPhone configuration tool when it is complete and using the tool to navigate to the ‘Applications‘ tab which can be found on the left-hand side of the app. The user then needs to click ‘Add’ at the top of the current window and locate the previously download iPhoto app which should be located under ‘Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications‘ for Mac OS X users.

2

When the iPhoto app have been located, it is then a case of clicking the name of the connected iPad in the left-hand panel and then selecting to view the ‘Applications‘ section. The rest of the process is pretty self explanatory and simply requires finding the iPhoto application in this list and clicking ‘install’ which will add it to the installed applications on the first generation iPad, bypassing the requirements without requiring a jailbreak. It seems like a strange move from Apple to not allow iPhoto to run officially on the original iPad, considering the experience seems to be extremely smooth and trouble free. The only issue comes when attempting to sync the iPad with iTunes, which will present a generated error message advising that the iPad isn’t authorized to use the iPhoto app.

The least problematic way to gain the best out of iPhoto is obviously to use it with a compatible iPad 2, or the beautiful new iPad when it eventually lands on our door mats, but until then this is a handy method to bypass those restrictions.

Windows themes: the end of the rainbow

According to legend, anyone lucky enough to find the end of the rainbow might discover a leprechaun’s hoard of hidden gold. Although we can’t guarantee a pot of gold, you can bring the fleeting magic of rainbows to your Windows desktop; the ephemeral colors in our new theme arc over landscapes from Iceland to Hawaii, and are even captured in the mist over rocky waterfalls, or as seen from an airplane soaring above the clouds.

clip_image001

Speaking of leprechauns, last year I published the Ireland theme in time for Saint Patrick’s Day, and although it isn’t new it’s still a great theme. Give it a try – personally I think it’s much better than green beer.

clip_image002

Our other newest theme is a silent sonata of Moonlight, as seen in skies from Scotland to Japan.

clip_image003

The other themes we’ve published recently feature the works of three photographers participating in the open call. The first one, from photographer Ian R. D. Johnson, celebrates the sunlit beauty of rural landscapes in South Australia.

clip_image004

Australia is also the subject of this theme from photographer Anton Gorlin, with a focus on shorelines, waterways, and sand dunes in New South Wales and Tasmania.

clip_image005

Last but definitely not least is Dreamgarden, showcasing the mysteriously impressionistic works of Russian photographer Christina Manchenko. I have seen a lot of incredible photography during the years I’ve worked on the Personalization Gallery, and a lot of excellent photographers have submitted images to the open call, but in my opinion this theme is really something special. It’s my new personal favorite, and is on my PCs both at work and at home. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

clip_image006

Since the Windows 8 Consumer Preview recently released, I just want to remind everyone that all of our Windows 7 themes also work in Windows 8.

On the other hand, if you have an older version of Windows, you can always use one of our wallpapers. We’ve published many new ones over the past several weeks, including these:

image clip_image042 clip_image043 clip_image044

clip_image045 clip_image046 clip_image047 clip_image048

That wraps up the recent additions to the gallery, but we’ll have a lot more in upcoming weeks… so keep on visiting the Windows Personalization Gallery for new Windows 7 themes and wallpapers.
